At this crucial juncture in the push to pass an economic recovery package, President Obama finds himself in the most unlikely of places: He is losing the message war.

Despite Obama’s sky high personal approval ratings, polls show support has declined for his stimulus bill since Republicans and their conservative talk-radio allies began railing against what they labeled as pork barrel spending within it.

The sheer size of it – hovering at about $900 billion — has prompted more protests that are now causing some moderate and conservative Democrats to flinch and, worse, hesitate.

The anxiety over lost momentum seemed almost palpable this week as the president in television interviews voiced frustration with his White House’s progress and the way his recovery program was being demonized as a Democratic spending frenzy.

WASHINGTON – They call it "stimulus" legislation, but the economic measures racing through Congress would devote tens of billions of dollars to causes that have little to do with jolting the country out of recession.

There's $345 million for Agriculture Department computers, $650 million for TV converter boxes, $15 billion for college scholarships — worthy, perhaps, but not likely to put many Americans back to work quickly.

Yes, there are many billions of dollars in "ready-to-go" job-creating projects in President Barack Obama's economic stimulus bill. But there are also plenty of items that are just unfinished business for Congress' old bulls.

An $800 billion-plus package, it turns out, gives lawmakers plenty of opportunities to rid themselves of nagging headaches left over from the days when running up the government's $10 trillion-plus debt was a bigger concern.

There's $1 billion to deal with Census problems and $88 million to help move the Public Health Service into a new building next year. The Senate would devote $2.1 billion to pay off a looming shortfall in public housing accounts, $870 million to combat the flu and $400 million to slow the spread of HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases such as chlamydia.

President George W. Bush will leave the White House on Tuesday morning and give way to Barack Obama at noon sharp.

By the time the Obamas enter their new quarters a few hours later, the new first family's clothes will be hanging in the closets and their photos on display.

A team of federal employees will work nonstop during the few precious hours while the outgoing and incoming presidents are occupied with the inaugural festivities. Clothes will be hung, any damage to White House furniture from the Bush years will be repaired and anything else the new first family wants to bring will be unpacked.

"It really begins at almost 12 o'clock on the dot," said Capricia Marshall, who as White House social secretary under President Bill Clinton helped oversee the move in 2000. "The former president's moving van is going out around the South grounds and the newly elected president's van is moving in."

Katie McCormick Lelyveld, spokeswoman for Michelle Obama, says the Obamas aren't bringing many large items because they are keeping their home and furniture in Chicago intact. Instead, they are bringing boxes of smaller personal items, including their clothes, family photos and toys for daughters Malia and Sasha, with the primary focus on getting the girls settled.

"We've got a regional set of problems," Obama said in a wide-ranging interview with USA TODAY, noting challenges in Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan as well as between Israelis and Palestinians. "They're not going to be solved in isolation. And we've got to be active in all these areas in order for us to be successful in any of these areas."

The diplomatic offensive, which could include the appointment of special envoys, contrasts sharply with President Bush's approach to the volatile region. Bush put less emphasis on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict early in his tenure and tended to deal with Middle East problems separately.

Obama advisers say plan would create 3.5m new jobs

WASHINGTON – Facing growing criticism of his economic recovery plan, President-elect Barack Obama made public Saturday a detailed analysis by his economic advisers that estimates the $775 billion plan of tax cuts and new spending would create 3.5 million jobs over the next two years.

With an eye on Obama having immediate access to bailout money already approved by Congress when he becomes president, his economic team and the Bush administration have discussed having Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson ask lawmakers for access to the $350 billion remaining in the fund.

White House spokeswoman Dana Perino said the administration hasn't decided whether to make such a request, which would be made within the next week. Under the terms of the legislation creating the fund, Congress would have 15 days to reject the request.

Obama picks Vilsack as agriculture secretary

Obama plans to announce the nomination on Wednesday, along with his selection for Interior secretary, Colorado Sen. Ken Salazar.

Vilsack, 58, who was a popular two-term governor of Iowa, was the first Democrat to enter the race for president won by Obama, but dropped out of the contest in February 2007. He was not immediately available for comment.

Obama calls for swift action on economy

CHICAGO – President-elect Obama said Friday that the country is facing the greatest economic challenge in a lifetime and "we're going to have to act swiftly to resolve it."

In his first news conference since winning the presidency Tuesday, Obama said Congress must pass an economic stimulus measure either before or just after he takes office in January. He also said unemployment benefits need to be extended.

But he deferred to President Bush and his economic team on major decisions in the coming weeks.

"The United States has only one government and one president at a time," Obama said.

Obama spoke after he and Vice President-elect Joe Biden met privately with economic experts to discuss ways to stabilize the troubled economy. Biden, the advisers and Obama's new chief of staff, Rahm Emanuel, stood behind him as he spoke for 20 minutes from a podium that said "the Office of the President Elect" at a hotel in his home town.

As we all were reminded in the 2000 election, the presidency is not decided by popular vote. It's decided by the Electoral College. The candidate who gets 270 Electoral College votes wins, so poll analysis turns into a simple math game. What collection of states can a candidate put together to get to 270?

Right now, it looks like Barack Obama has a lot more routes to 270 than John McCain does. Obama is starting off with what I call an electoral college "head start." More states are likely in his camp than John McCain's, giving Obama about 234 electoral votes to bank on compared to John McCain's 163.

Obama had always planned to attend the debate and was aboard his plane preparing to take off when McCain's announcement was made. McCain quickly moved to his own private aircraft and headed South with his wife and former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani and his wife, Judith, on board.

In remarks to a crowd of several thousand in this pivotal electoral state, the Arizona senator said he agreed there should be no taxpayer-financed bailout of Lehman Brothers even as the investment banking giant filed for bankruptcy. Meanwhile, Merrill Lynch was selling itself to Bank of America for less than half of the iconic brokerage firm's recent value.

Barack Obama spoke on Wednesday night about a subject that often gets short shrift on the 2008 campaign trail: immigration. The Democratic candidate made the speech to a crowd of Hispanic leaders at black-tie dinner capping the end of a Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute gathering in Washington.After spending a few minutes talking about his opponent and his other policy proposals, Obama got his loudest cheers with these lines: “This election is about the 12 million people living in the shadows, the communities taking immigration enforcement into their own hand. They are counting on us to stop the hateful rhetoric filling our airwaves, and rise above the fear, and rise above the demagoguery, and finally enact comprehensive immigration reform.”
